These three ISO standards get confused constantly — all environmental, all with similar numbers, but each covers something distinct.
ISO 14001: Environmental Management Systems
This is the broadest of the three — a framework for managing an organisation’s overall environmental impact: waste, pollution, resource use, compliance with environmental law, and continual improvement. Think of it as the umbrella system for how a company manages its environmental responsibilities day to day. It’s the most widely adopted of the three, and often the first certification a company pursues.
ISO 50001: Energy Management Systems
A more focused standard specifically about how an organisation manages energy use — measuring consumption, setting efficiency targets, and systematically reducing energy waste. Where ISO 14001 covers environmental impact broadly, ISO 50001 zooms in specifically on energy performance, which is often where the most direct cost savings and emissions reductions are found.
ISO 14064: Greenhouse Gas Quantification and Verification
This one is different in kind from the other two — it’s not a management system standard, but a framework for measuring, reporting, and verifying greenhouse gas emissions specifically. It’s split into three parts: organisational-level GHG accounting, project-level GHG reduction quantification, and requirements for third-party verification bodies. This is the standard that underpins credible, auditable emissions data — the kind that supports CDP submissions or SBTi target tracking.
How They Relate
A company might run ISO 14001 as its overall environmental management framework, use ISO 50001 to specifically drive down energy consumption within that, and rely on ISO 14064 to ensure the GHG numbers it reports are accurate and independently verifiable. They’re not competing standards — in a mature sustainability programme, they typically work together.
Why “Lead Auditor” Matters
Being a Lead Auditor across all three means being qualified not just to help a company build these systems, but to independently assess whether another organisation’s system actually meets the standard — the same rigour applied whether verifying a client’s environmental management system or their submitted emissions data.
